Europe Encourages Iran to Continue Nuclear Negotiations

The talks in Swiss Geneva between Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and European foreign ministers ended on Friday evening after a few hours of negotiations. The good result today is that we leave the room with the impression that Iran is ready to further discuss these issues, says Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.

The talks were held with European foreign ministers from France, the United Kingdom and Germany to discuss the escalated situation between Iran and Israel and the Iranian nuclear program. Also, the EU's foreign chief Kaja Kallas participated.

After the talks, the United Kingdom's Foreign Minister David Lammy said that Europeans are "eager to continue ongoing discussions with Iran, and we urge Iran to continue its talks with the USA".

Lammy's French colleague Jean-Noel Barrot also urged Iran to continue nuclear energy talks "without waiting" for an end to the Israeli attacks.

Abbas Araghchi said in turn that Iran is ready to "consider diplomacy again, when the aggression is stopped" and that the country supports continued talks with Germany, France, the United Kingdom and the EU.

"Europe will not be able to help"

The USA's President Donald Trump is very skeptical of Europe's possibilities to end the war between Israel and Iran.

Iran does not want to talk to Europe. They want to talk to us. Europe will not be able to help with this, he said to reporters on Friday evening.

Prior to the talks, Araghchi condemned Israel's attacks on Iran and called it a "betrayal" of the diplomatic efforts with the USA. According to him, Tehran and Washington were in the process of forming a "promising agreement" regarding Iran's nuclear program.

We were attacked in the middle of an ongoing diplomatic process, he said.

Attack or not?

Israel, in turn, demanded that the European foreign ministers should take a "firm stance" in the talks about Iran's nuclear program, said Israel's UN ambassador Daniel Meron.

The USA and Iran have during the spring negotiated about a new agreement that will limit Iran's nuclear program. Trump demands that Iran should not have any nuclear energy program at all and has threatened to go to military attack if Iran does not show itself to be compliant.

During Thursday, Trump stated that he "within two weeks" will make a decision on whether the USA will attack Iran or not.
